Gilks: ‘Blackpool fans can be the 12th man’

Blackpool goalkeeper Matt Gilks has said his team’s home support will be crucial when they play the last game of the season at home to Charlton on Saturday.

Blackpool know a draw will be enough to avoid relegation, if Birmingham lose their game in hand at home to Wigan this evening.

Gilks told BBC Radio Lancashire: “The support at Wigan was superb. If that can be replicated back at Bloomfield Road on Saturday, the 12th man will surely get us over that line.”

3,500 Blackpool fans travelled to Wigan on Saturday to see their team gain a crucial 2-0 win, with Gilks saving a penalty in the first half.

Blackpool are currently three points clear of the relegation zone with one game to play, and their Interim manager Barry Ferguson has said he always believed his players would see them safe.

Ferguson said: “We’ve got to get the job done, but I never mentioned once about the dreaded ‘r’ word.

“I’ve always believed in the boys in that dressing room. The hard work paid off on Saturday, but we’re not going to rest here.”
