Nottingham Forest suffered a shock defeat in midweek, as they were defeated 3-2 by League One side Burton Albion in the EFL Cup in a hugely disappointing display.

But one of their key summer signings has spoken out about his disappointment at the result that saw the Reds exit the competition at the last 16 stage.

Gil Dias arrived in the summer on a loan deal from French giants, AS Monaco, but he has struggled to adapt to English football, much to the frustration of Forest supporters.

In an interview with the Nottingham Post, Dias admitted that Burton deserved the win and described Forest as playing 'very soft'.

'It was a disappointing night for us. We want to get through to the next round and we did not manage to do that, so the team is upset.

'I think Burton deserved to win the game because we did not play well. We were very soft. They played better than us and they deserved to win.'

However, the 22-year-old is remaining fully focused on recapturing the team's good form when they return to action against Chris Wilder's Sheffield United side this weekend.

'I think there is still plenty more to come. We work every day to deliver our best performance,' he said. 'We did not do that against Burton.

'But we are going to work hard for Saturday – to show that we are better than we showed against Burton; to show that this was not good image of what we are capable of.'

Aitor Karanka will be hoping for a positive reaction to the shock defeat when his Forest side host league-leaders Sheffield United at the City Ground at the weekend.

The Verdict:

I share the views of the majority of Nottingham Forest fans in saying that Dias has been a real disappointment for Aitor Karanka's side this season.

Dias will need to step up and fulfil his potential at the club if they are to challenge for a top-six finish this season and if they don't then it will certainly be an opportunity missed, as Forest have shown glimpses of their potential quality this season.

Even though they will be slight underdogs going into their game against the Blades this weekend, they will be confident of getting a positive result in front of their home crowd.
