Speaking to the club’s official website, Birmingham City manager Gianfranco Zola has admitted he has been working on his side’s defensive mistakes ahead of their clash with Wigan Athletic this evening.

The Blues host Wigan at St Andrew’s this evening, and are desperately trying to turn their form around.

Since Zola replaced Gary Rowett as manager, Birmingham have only won twice from 16 fixtures, slipping into the bottom half of the Sky Bet Championship table.

Leeds United defeated Birmingham 3-1 on Friday evening, despite the Blues putting in a spirited performance against the promotion chasing Whites, they were undone by poor pieces of defending.

Zola has identified individual mistakes his side are making in defence, and spoke to @BCFC about the issue, he said: “If you make a mistake as a whole defence then you have a problem because you need to work more with the whole team.

“But when you have individual mistakes, you can change them and try to teach them.

“I will show them analysis of the goals (conceded) to give them why the mistake came.”

Zola’s side are currently 17th in the Championship table, and have slipped from the brink of the Play-Offs to the bottom-half of the table in two months.

It is highly unlikely Birmingham will be pulled into a relegation battle, but both fans and management will be hoping for an upturn in results quickly.
