Barnsley’s promotion back to the Championship was confirmed last night, without a ball being kicked in anger at Oakwell.
They were waiting on results from Fleetwood and Portsmouth, knowing a win for their closest rivals would ensure the hunt went down to the final match of the season.
It didn’t, Fleetwood beat Sunderland and Peterborough did the same to Portsmouth at Fratton Park. It meant the Tykes’ players were able to celebrate at home in front of the TV and leaves just the title to play for this weekend.
Tributes poured in from former players and staff, with Josh Scowen amongst those wishing his former club well. He’s now with Queens Park Rangers, but his tweet gave Tykes fans an opportunity to express their admiration for him.
They took to social media to ask him to come back, tongue-in-cheek surely, as well as thank him for his comments.
They’ve likely to square up against him in Championship action next season, unless Daniel Stendel reads the tweets and makes a handful of fans’ dreams come true.
