Derby County struggled defensively towards the end of the 2016/17 season, which led to fans calling for reinforcements to be added this summer.

Gary Rowett has already brought in experienced centre back Curtis Davies, and look set to sign right-back Andre Wisdom this summer, but one or two more new defensive players would be welcome at Pride Park ahead of the new campaign.

With Wisdom coming in, and Craig Forsyth returning from long term injury to add to Max Lowe and Chris Baird, the full back department is already looking healthier, however in the centre of defence there are still frailties.

Richard Keogh, Alex Pearce and Jason Shackell were all inconsistent last season and made mistakes that cost Derby points, which has led to divided opinions in Derbyshire on what centre back partner new arrival Curtis Davies should have.

A versatile youngster that can play in the centre of defence is Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who transfermarkt.com value at £850k.

The Dutchman has started to break into the first team squad at Old Trafford, but still has just 12 Premier League appearances to his name, with just three of those being starts.

Fosu-Mensah has impressed when on the pitch for Man United, showing he has potential to become a top defender in future seasons.

But for this potential to be unlocked, regular game time is needed and the 19-year-old could really benefit from a season on loan with a Championship club, and Derby could be a good fit.

The Rams are in need of defensive reinforcements, and Fosu-Mensah could demonstrate his ability in various positions as the defensive midfield position could also be available.

George Thorne - who broke his leg on the final day of the 2015/16 season - is expected to be back next year, but by bringing in another player in that position, it allows Thorne to properly get back full fitness before playing.

Jose Mourinho isn't known for giving young players a chance, so both parties could benefit from Timothy Fosu-Mensah joining Derby on loan.
