Sunderland barely survived in the Premier League at the end of the 2015/16 season under Sam Allardyce.

He subsequently left in the summer and was replaced with former Manchester United manager David Moyes.

The Black Cats were hoping to avoid a third successive campaign of battling against the drop.

So, ahead of the 2016/17 Premier League season – Moyes moved to strengthen the side he had inherited to avoid any such issues during his reign.

Ten players came through the doors at the Stadium of Light on a permanent basis with three moving to the club temporarily.

And he used his Old Trafford links to secure the season-long signing of Belgian talent Adnan Januzaj.

Moyes confirmed the agreement, and there was plenty of reaction to the signing of the youngster.

There was much anticipation to his arrival, but it was a signing that fell flat.

Having played 35 times for the Black Cats, he managed one goal and three assists – with his only goal coming in the League Cup.

Januzaj failed to live up to the hype – ultimately being a part of the Sunderland side to finish bottom of the Premier League to be relegated to the Championship.

It just goes to show that just because you belong to a club like Manchester United, it does not give you a divine right to have a meaningful impact throughout a season.

And his age and inexperience would prove the difference in a less than impressive loan spell.
