Luton Town entered the 2017/18 season as a bit of an unknown quantity to the rest of League One having just won promotion from the fourth tier.

But after a few months of the season, their rivals had no choice but to take notice of Nathan Jones and his troops as they drove up the league table.

Kenilworth Road continued to be an absolute fortress and the Hatters' slick, brutal attack started to win them plaudits across the country.

It was a style that also increased the stock of Jones, who left at the start of 2019 to take over from Gary Rowett at Stoke City.

No Luton fan needed to see that, but under interim boss Mick Harford, the club continued to push on and strengthen in the January transfer window.

And they made a couple of impressive acquisitions.

This is FLW Rewind where we take a look back at a big decision made by a club, analyse the initial reaction and document what happened next.

After George Thorne had arrived on loan from Derby County, a permanent signing was brought in from League One promotion rivals Barnsley in the form of attacking midfielder George Moncur.

Moncur was a player who arrived having never really found his feet at his previous clubs, but that did not bother the Luton faithful who, after the 25-year-old had impressed against them earlier in the season, were delighted to see him arrive:

January signings often go really well or really poorly. And this is one that has certainly fallen into the former category so far.

Despite largely only playing cameo roles, Moncur has still managed to score an impressive four goals in six matches, including a stunning free-kick away to Fleetwood Town last weekend in his first start for the club.

The Hatters still sit top and show no signs of loosening their grip on the third-tier title.
