With Derby County currently unable to add new players to their squad right now, the next best thing is seemingly sorting out their coaching staff ahead of the new season.

It's not for their senior squad though but for their academy setup which has brought through several players in recent years, and they've brought back a former player to help bridge the gap between the under-23's and the first team.

And that man is Jake Buxton, who as a player was a solid as a rock centre-back who played 159 times in all competitions for the Rams between 2009 and 2016, with then-manager Nigel Clough taking him with him from Conference side Burton Albion to Pride Park.

Buxton was not always a regular starter as injuries hampered some of his seasons but he was very dependable until his departure in 2016, when he joined Wigan Athletic and after that moved back to Burton, before taking his first steps into management in the 2020-21 season with the Brewers.

That didn't work out though with Buxton being sacked after just 21 league games, but he returned to the Rams at the back end of last season to assist with the coaching of Derby's under-23's after Gary Bowyer left for Salford City - and now Buxton is back on a permanent basis.

Derby fans have been reacting to the news and some have even called for his return to the playing squad with the club desperately in need of defenders!
