Despite Sunderland having two goalkeepers competing for the starting jersey at the Stadium of Light, Lee Johnson looks set to bring Anthony Patterson back into the mix.

That is because the youngster has been recalled from his loan spell at National League side Notts County today on the eve of the Black Cats' League One clash with Ipswich Town.

The 21-year-old signed for the Magpies in September until the end of the following month, but after showing good form for the National League side the deal was extended.

Patterson racked up eight starts for County and kept three clean sheets and he was a much-needed addition for Ian Burchnall's side following an injury to starting stopper Sam Slocombe.

Having started four games for the Wearsiders in the league and cup this season, Patterson's loan outing came about thanks to the acquisition of Bayern Munich goalkeeper Rob-Thorben Hoffmann, who jumped up above Patterson and Lee Burge into Johnson's starting spot.

However Burge has picked up an injury as confirmed by the Sunderland Echo, meaning Sunderland have used their option to bring Patterson back to the club but have left County in a bit of bother.

With Sunderland on a bit of a bad run of form right now, some fans are even telling Johnson on social media to give Patterson a go again this weekend, with the club winning all four games that he's played in this season.
