Leeds United goalkeeper Andy Lonergan’s proposed transfer to Sunderland is off after the Black Cats failed to agree personal terms with the player.

Lonergan has been expected to complete a move to the north east before the transfer deadline this evening, but Phil Hay of The Yorkshire Evening Post wrote on Twitter that the deal was now dead and that the player would return to Elland Road until the end of the season.

Lonergan only linked up with the Whites in the summer from Wolverhampton Wanderers as new boss Thomas Christiansen looked to shake up his options between the sticks, but a series of howlers has ensured that fellow summer addition Felix Wiedwald has made the starting spot his own in recent months.

The Preston-born stopper had been expected to become the new number one at The Stadium of Light, but it appears that Lonergan’s contract expectations were far greater than what manager Chris Coleman was willing to offer to secure his services.
