Gerhard Struber delivers refreshing Barnsley stance on season’s resume

Published

Barnsley boss Gerhard Struber has stated he will not waste energy focusing on the restart date in the Championship, insisting he will be working to prepare his squad for the relegation battle they face.

It has been a tough return to the Championship for Barnsley and a tough introduction to the division for Struber, who has nine games to guide the Tykes to an unlikely revival.

Currently, Barnsley sit bottom of the Championship table, seven points adrift of safety with nine games of the season remaining.

Have Barnsley got higher or lower than 32 points in the Championship this season?

Of course, the season has been on hold since the first weekend of March, but restart plans have been put in place now and Barnsley will resume on June 20th.

That date has caused controversy and whilst Struber wishes he had more time to work with his squad, he is determined to get the Tykes ready.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Post, Struber said: “When we get a bit more time, of course it is better for me and my whole team.

“But right now, they told us that we begin on the 20th of June and it is a fact. We have two-and-a-half weeks and I will give my best to prepare my boys.

“We will not lose energy with other topics and we need a high spirit every time we come together in training.”

A tough run-in awaits Barnsley, but they will take on a handful of sides around them in the remaining nine games despite meetings with Leeds United, Brentford and Nottingham Forest.

Struber’s side will face Stoke City, Wigan Athletic and Luton Town between now and the end of the season.

The Verdict

This is a great attitude for Struber to have; there’s a lot of moaning and groaning going on across the Championship, so it’s refreshing to hear comments like this.

Barnsley have a lot on the line and they might’ve opted to be a camp taking issue with the governing bodies, but their focus seems to be on the fight at hand.

It’s a tough task for Barnsley to survive this season, but they sound like they will be doing everything they can to stay in the Championship.
