Millwall attacking midfielder George Honeyman has admitted that he is aiming to secure a return to the Premier League during his time at The Den.

Honeyman opted to secure a switch to the Lions last month as he joined the club for an undisclosed fee from fellow Championship side Hull City.

Having signed a long-term deal with Millwall, the 27-year-old will be keen to make a positive impression for the club during the opening stages of the 2022/23 season.

A product of Sunderland's youth academy, Honeyman represented the club in the top-flight during the early stages of his career.

Before leaving the Black Cats in 2019, the attacking midfielder made six appearances in the Premier League.

Considering that Millwall only narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs earlier this year, they will be relatively confident in their ability to launch another push for a top-six finish in the new term.

Honeyman could potentially make his competitive debut for the Lions when they take on Stoke City on July 30th.

Ahead of the upcoming campaign, Honeyman has revealed that he believes that promotion to the Premier League is attainable at Millwall.

Speaking to the South London Press, Honeyman said: "I was lucky enough to come through at a Premier League club and train with Premier League players.

"The ambition my whole career has been to play there and I’ve been lucky to make some appearances in the Premier League.

"I feel that is attainable again.

“I probably realise, at my age, that it is going to have to be from a Championship club going up – but I’ve joined one that has been on the brink of the play-offs in the last few years.

"Hopefully I can add to it and we get over that final hurdle.

"What a way it would be to do it, if I can help Millwall get into the Premier League."

The Verdict

Whereas Millwall have not participated in the top-flight since 1990, they have been able to make progress as a club since handing over the reins to Gary Rowett and thus there is no reason why they cannot challenge for promotion next season.

Honeyman will be keen to become a key player for the Lions after illustrating some signs of promise in the previous campaign.

The attacking midfielder managed to find the back of the net on five occasions for Hull in the Championship whilst he also chipped in with four assists in 35 appearances.

By maintaining his fitness as well as his consistency, Honeyman may be able to help Millwall achieve a great deal of success in the coming months.
