Massimo Luongo will be sorely missed at Hillsborough, having added much-needed balance in central areas, allowing the likes of Byers and Barry Bannan to express themselves in the final third.

Will Vaulks has arrived on a free following his release from Cardiff City to fill that void, with competition for places still very strong under Darren Moore.

Wednesday will be bullishly targeting automatic promotion next season, where there was a transition element to the previous campaign and Byers can assert himself at the forefront of Moore's plans in pre-season.

The Verdict

Ipswich Town and Wednesday are the early market leaders for promotion in League One, with the latter's transfer business suggesting that they are as good a bet as any to set the pace in the third tier this season.

Byers is one of the better box-to-box midfielders in League One and will have strong ambitions of playing in the Championship again in the near future.

The 26-year-old chipped in with six goals from midfield in just 21 league starts last term, a figure he will be confident of beating should Moore trust him with more regular opportunities.

Bannan is a great foil for Byers, giving the former Swansea City man the licence to get forward and take up dangerous positions more often.
