Swansea City midfielder George Byers has described his side's 1-0 victory over bitter rivals Cardiff City as the best game he's been involved in.

The Liberty Stadium outfit sealed a narrow win over the Bluebirds courtesy of defender Ben Wilmot's first-half header, which also saw his side end their four-game winless run on home soil.

Swansea's victory was their seventh of the season and it moved them up to fourth in the table, while Cardiff saw their miserable away run continue as they remain 14th in the Championship standings.

Swans boss Steve Cooper made a total of six changes to his side from the 3-0 defeat to Brentford in midweek, with one of these alterations seeing Byers replace Jay Fulton alongside Matt Grimes in midfield.

It proved to be a successful move with Byers producing an accomplished performance in the centre of the park as Swansea won the midfield battle, and the former Watford man took to Twitter after the match to share a passionate message.

The 23-year-old claimed it was the best match he has been involved in, while he dedicated the success to the club's supporters who have had little to cheer about at the Liberty Stadium during recent weeks.

Byers has now made a total of 15 appearances for the Welsh side this season while playing in a variety of midfield roles, and he has scored three goals during these matches.

The Verdict

Cooper faced a midfield selection dilemma ahead of the South Wales derby with Byers, Fulton and Tom Carroll all pushing for a spot in the side, but Byers' performance suggests the Swansea boss made the right call.

Byers produced a well-rounded midfield showing as he helped dictate his side's play from deep, while he was also not afraid to get stuck in to tackles and thwart Cardiff's attacking efforts.

His post-match tweet indicates how much he relished the occasion of competing in his first match against Cardiff, and his performance was surely enough to earn him a place in the Swansea side going forward.
