Gary Rowett is eyeing a move back to the Championship with strugglers Nottingham Forest, according to the Daily Mirror.

Rowett's shock dismissal at Birmingham City last month means that he and his backroom staff are available and they could be the perfect, with him and his staff already based in the Midlands.

The East Midlands club are close to being taken over by a US consortium group led by John Jay Moores and with current boss Philippe Montanier struggling with the club sat in 20th place, only two points off the bottom three, his job will be at serious threat once the deal goes through.

If the new owners replace Montanier with Gary Rowett then it could be the perfect way to help the Reds push up the league table, after a hugely disappointing first half of the season.

The Reds will need to act quick if they are to appoint Rowett who will undoubtedly be keen to strengthen the squad in the January transfer window with the backing of new owners.

Montanier's side face Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium on Saturday in the Emirates FA Cup.
