Derby County's squad is beginning to take shape as we quickly approach the opening weekend of the 2017/18 season.

Gary Rowett has added some new faces to his Rams side, whilst offloading a handful too, and a convincing pre-season performance against German side Kaiserslautern has given supporters renewed confidence heading into the season.

Whilst one or two signings are still needed at Pride Park anyway, Derby were dealt an injury blow last week following the news that Darren Bent will be out until around the Christmas period with a hamstring injury.

Bent wasn't the first choice striker at the club, however he brought experience and squad depth, and has netted a fair few during his time with Derby.

With Bent out of the picture for at least the first half of the season, Gary Rowett may be forced to turn to the loan market to cover for the former England international's absence, and an ideal man for the job could be Southampton youngster Sam Gallagher.

Gallagher has previously had two loan spells at Championship level, with MK Dons in 2015/16, and Blackburn Rovers last year.

The 21-year-old impressed during his time at Ewood Park, and he was one of the better players in what was a miserable campaign that saw Rovers suffer relegation.

Gallagher scored 11 league goals during his spell in Lancashire, but it wasn't enough to keep the club afloat in the Championship.

Gallagher is young, and has a knack for finding the net.

Gary Rowett should look to give him a chance at Derby this season to add attacking reinforcements as the Rams aim for promotion to the promised land.
