Millwall manager Gary Rowett has admitted that Ben Thompson will be available for the club’s FA Cup showdown with Crystal Palace this weekend whilst Connor Mahoney is making good progress in his road to recovery.
Thompson would have been hoping to feature regularly for the Lions this season after making 30 appearances for the club in the second-tier during the previous campaign.
However, the 26-year-old has failed to make a positive impression for the club in recent months as he has only played four games in all competitions.
Rowett revealed in November that there is a possibility that Thompson could be allowed to move on to pastures new during the current transfer window.
The midfielder’s current deal at The Den is set to expire in June and thus this month represents the final opportunity that the Lions will get to secure a fee for him.
As for Mahoney, the winger has been forced to watch on from the sidelines after sustaining a hamstring injury during the club’s clash with Nottingham Forest in September.
The 24-year-old suffered a setback in his road to recovery in November as he picked up another injury issue whilst playing for Millwall’s Under-23 outfit.
Ahead of the Lions’ third-round clash with Palace this weekend, Rowett shared an update on Thompson and Mahoney.
Speaking to News at Den, the Millwall boss said: “Connor might not be a million miles away but he has not trained much.
“Thommo will be available, he’s back training.”
Both of these players will be determined to prove their worth to Rowett after missing a considerable chunk of action in recent months.
It could be argued that Saturday’s meeting with Palace may be Thompson’s final opportunity to impress his manager as a failure to deliver the goods in this fixture could result in him being allowed to move on to pastures new.
As for Mahoney, he will be looking to stake a claim for a regular spot in the club’s side after seeing his game-time limited due to injury this season.
However, Rowett may need to hold fire when it comes to re-introducing Mahoney if the winger is unable to return to full fitness this week.
