Millwall manager Gary Rowett has revealed what Mahlon Romeo has to do in order to realise his full potential and become a top full-back.

The Lions right-back has been a regular in the side for the past few seasons and has continued to hold down the spot on the right side of defence since Rowett's appointment last October.

The defender signed for the club in the summer of 2015 from Gillingham and was able to force his way into the senior squad at The Den.

When speaking to News At Den, Rowett said: "I’ve been really impressed with him, as an attacking full-back, an attacking wing-back it comes naturally to him.

"He wants to go and get forward, he wants to get into those positions.

"I spoke to him a little about if he wants to become a top full-back he’s got to add assists and goals to his game.

"He has started to affect the game in the final third, [winning] the penalty against Fulham. He creates lots of good opportunities for other people but needs to add some of those numbers to his game.

"I’ve always said the same to him, defensively when Mahlon has that right mentality to defend properly, he’s a really good defender. Every now and then he switches off his concentration because that’s not something that comes naturally to him.

"But I think he’s done it much better in the last six or seven games. His mentality is much better and I’ve said it to him before, I think he’s got far more potential, it’s just about how much he wants to drag that potential out of himself."

He hasn't scored in the past 106 Millwall games with his last goal coming against Sheffield United in December 2017.

Romeo has become one of Rowett's more reliable players at The Den having played every minute of the manager's 20 league games in charge so far.

The right-back has only chalked up one assist this season as Rowett makes it perfectly clear how he wants the 24-year-old to improve.

The Verdict

Romeo could become the best right-back in the Championship if he improves his goal contributions column.

He has all the attributes to defend well when in one-on-one situations against opposition wingers and his physical attributes means he can cover ground down the flank.

Rowett has stated what he wants Romeo to do better in games and he will be pushing the defender to improve his end product when getting into attacking situations over the next few months.
