Millwall manager Gary Rowett has suggested that Millwall defender James Brown has to try and push Mahlon Romeo for the right-back spot.

This comes after the 22-year-old recently extended his deal at the club, which will see him stay at the Den until the summer of 2021.

The Lions have used Romeo as their primary right-back this season. The defender has made 31 appearances in the league so far, only missing two games.

Romeo is just 24-years-old, meaning Millwall look set to have some serious competition in the right-back position moving forward.

Rowett has indicated that Brown shouldn't just be happy to be at the club, he has to take it to the next level and try and take Romeo's place in the side.

Speaking to London News Online, Rowett said: "Rather than be happy to be around it he has got to try and get Mahlon’s shirt. It’s about having that little bit extra bite.

"It’s good Browny has signed but this is stage one–there are three or four more stages to go to get that potential out. He is a good lad with good qualities."

The Verdict

It's good to see Rowett trying to push on one of the youngsters that seems to be on the periphery of the first team at the moment.

He's building a good squad at Millwall, and he clearly sees the full-back as someone who is part of his plans and can threaten for a starting place moving forward.

Competition is key in a successful squad, and it's good that Romeo is feeling some pressure, otherwise, there is the risk that he will get too comfortable, knowing he'll be starting week-in, week-out.

Millwall's ascent up the table has shown the confidence that Rowett can instill in his players and comments like these should only boost that further.
