Stoke City manager Gary Rowett has told Saido Berahino that he is no longer taking penalties for the club, after the striker missed a last minute chance against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend.

With Benik Afobe off the pitch, the club did not have a designated penalty taker, so Berahino stepped up and slammed his spot-kick against the bar, wasting the chance to rescue a point.

"Benik is our designated penalty taker but I have spoken to Incey and if Benik isn't on the pitch then it is down to him," Rowett revealed to Stoke's official Twitter account.

"Saido was flying though & I understood why he wanted to take the ball.

"I assure you that we will have a long list of players, in order, to make sure we are suitably prepared next time a situation like that occurs."

Stoke returned to losing ways in that match against Blackburn Rovers, just days after picking up their second win of the Championship season against Swansea City.

They were 2-0 down by half-time against Rovers, leading to their own fans booing them from the pitch, only for them to fall further behind just a minute into the second-half.

Scrappy goals from Berahino and Tom Ince pulled the Potters back into the game, but the former West Brom striker could not take the chance to rescue a point from the spot.

The Verdict

This seems a little harsh from Rowett, especially to strip him of any penalty duty so publicly.

It also does not shine too well on him that the team do not have a back-up penalty taker for when their primary one is not on the pitch.

The pressure is building on Rowett and he needs something to go for him very soon.
