Gary Rowett has revealed that Millwall didn't hold Deadline Day talks with Yannick Bolasie - but the Everton winger's name was put to him.

Journalist Peter O'Rourke reported on Friday that the Lions had joined Middlesbrough in the race to sign the former Crystal Palace man, although a move never materialised to either and Bolasie ended up staying on Merseyside.

Rowett admitted that Millwall were in the market for another quick winger to compete with Mason Bennett, who missed Saturday's victory at Wycombe through injury, but weren't able to add to their ranks.

The Lions boss said that whilst Bolasie's was mentioned, but didn't feel like a deal would have been possible.

However, Millwall did sign another attacker on Deadline Day in Kenneth Zohore from West Brom on loan until January, and the Danish frontman could make his debut in their Championship clash against Luton Town at The Den this evening.

Asked whether he talks with the Bolasie, Rowett told South London Press said: "No, we didn’t. It was a conversation someone had with me. 'Would we be interested in Yannick Bolasie?’. I didn’t feel as though we’d be able to come close to where that deal might be at.

"We were after that type of pacey, powerful player at the top end of the pitch in those front three areas. We wanted to get someone who could add that little extra.

“It shows when Mason Bennett is out that we're a little bit short of that type of player. You saw that on the bench on Saturday, we didn't have that many attacking options because all of them were on the pitch apart from Jon Dadi [Bodvarsson].

"We thought it would be really, really important to add that kind of player."

The Verdict

Bolasie would have been a statement signing from Millwall, but it was one of those typical Deadline Day transfer rumours of someone putting two and two together.

Millwall wouldn't have been able to cover Bolasie's wages for starters, and it was a deal that never looked like happening, although it was exciting to consider the prospect of seeing Jed Wallace on one side and the Everton man on the other for a couple of hours at least.

Rowett might have missed out on this one, but it was still an impressive window for the Lions.
