Gary Rowett reacts to claims of seven-figure Millwall transfer bid

Millwall manager Gary Rowett has confirmed that the club are interested in signing KV Kortrijk striker Pape Habib Gueye, but dismissed suggested a bid has already been made.

With Millwall seemingly in the market for a striker during the January transfer window, it appears Gueye is a player who has emerged on their radar.

According to recent reports from Football Insider, Millwall have had a £1.5million bid rejected by Kortrijk for Gueye, who has scored 13 goals in 55 appearances for the Belgian First Division A side to date.

Which club did Millwall sign these 28 midfielders from?

George Saville?

Now however, it seems that while the Championship club are indeed aware of Gueye as a possible target, claims of a bid are in fact premature.

Responding to those claims of an offer from Millwall being rejected, Rowett told London News Online: “I am respectful he is at another club. Some of the links you see are a little bit tenuous.

“He is a player we’ve had interest in, but I think he is injured at the moment. We certainly haven’t put any offers in for that player, or any other player at this moment in time. There is a little something in that, but not a huge deal at the moment.”

There are currently two-and-a-half years remaining on Gueye’s contract with Kortrijk, securing his future in Belgium until the end of the 2023/24 season.

As things stand, Millwall are 11th in the Championship table, seven points adrift of the play-off places, with their next outing an FA Cup clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.

The Verdict

It seems this could be one to keep an eye on for some time to come yet.

Understandably, Rowett seems reluctant to give much away here, since he is not going to want any controversy about saying too much about a player from another club.

However, it does seem as though Millwall could benefit from another striker moving forward, so the fact that they are aware of Gueye, means there is the potential for that interest to be stepped up later.

Indeed, at 22-years-old, Gueye still has plenty of time remaining in his career, so it could even be the case that it is a different transfer window to this one, when we really see this interest in the striker re-emerge.
