Derby County boss Gary Rowett has praised the character of his players as a key reason behind the success he has enjoyed at the club.
The former Birmingham manager has led the Rams to second in the league and recently signed a new contract after strong interest from Premier League Stoke City.
And, speaking to the official site, Rowett revealed that having players with a strong mentality and willing to take responsibility is a key part to Derby’s progress this season.
“You can affect it in a way as a manager, but not massively. The players can more so because they are out on the pitch. You have to empower them to try and make some of those decisions or feel they can at least try to make them.”
“I work on the proviso that if they’ve got the tools to do the job then a player with a good character and one that has performed over a period of time, you can get even more out of them if you can get them in a better environment than they’ve been in.”
This interview offers a good insight into how Rowett operates and reveals what he expects and demands from his players.
At Derby, there are several big characters and experienced players and they are clearly responding to the way the manager works as you can see with results on the pitch.
Now, it’s about maintaining those high standards and you can be sure they will under Rowett as they look to keep hold of the all-important second automatic spot.
