Former Derby County manager, Gary Rowett, has truthfully admitted that he should have potentially stayed at the Rams after leaving for Stoke City in 2018.

Rowett had a successful season in charge of Derby, as he guided the club to a sixth placed finish and an unfortunate play-off semi-final defeat to Fulham.

After the campaign ended, he jumped ship to what was a recently relegated Stoke side who had the aim of getting back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.

He was then relieved of his duties at the Potters midway through last season, and has since had time to reflect on the decision to leave the Rams for Stoke.

Speaking to the Mirror, Rowett said: "I’ve got some regrets on Derby, we’d done well and there was talk of reducing the budget, coming into line with FFP and I thought it would take time. Maybe I should have stayed but it’s easy to look back when the next job doesn’t go well."

The Verdict

A tough one to react to, this one. It's always easy to say that maybe you should regret something if it goes badly wrong, but at that current moment in time when he left for the Potters he probably felt that it was the right decision.

Stoke had such a poor season last year, but haven't done any better this time around in the first eight fixtures, in fact they don't look up for the challenge under now boss Nathan Jones.

There seems to be more of an underlying problem at Stoke and that is probably why Rowett is now thinking that he should have stayed, maybe he's realised that things don't happen over night.
