Gary Rowett offers insight into Millwall’s contract offer to QPR target

Millwall boss Gary Rowett has claimed that QPR target Danny McNamara has been offered “a good deal” as the Championship club look to tie him down long-term.

Football League World first revealed the R’s interest in McNamara late last month with new manager Michael Beale looking to add attacking full-backs to his squad.

The Loftus Road outfit are understood have made multiple bids for the 23-year-old, who is out of contract at Millwall next summer, but have seen all of them rejected by their London rivals.

McNamara is in talks with the Lions over a new long-term deal but an agreement is yet to be reached, which will likely only encourage the R’s to continue their pursuit.

Speaking to South London Press, Rowett reiterated that the south London club do not want to sell the defender and indicated that the bids tabled so far had been nowhere near their valuation of him.

He said: “I think there has been a couple of offers [from QPR]. First and foremost Danny is our player and we want him to continue to be our player, he has developed really well.

“For me, when you have got a young player who has done really well you want them to progress and be part of your plans. He’s a player the fans like a lot and we like a lot – you don’t want those sort of players to leave.

“It’s an interesting one really because of the level of the bids – I wouldn’t bid for a QPR young player for that sort of amount, because it’s not even going to be close to any kind of valuation.

“At this moment in time I can’t imagine that changing. We want Danny McNamara to be our player and to develop and move forward with us. It’s a bit of a non-story, if I’m being honest.

“My focus is on Danny signing his contract. He’s been offered a good deal by the club and hopefully he’ll sign that contract soon.”

A product of the Millwall academy, 2021/22 was a breakthrough season for McNamara at The Den as the defender established himself as Rowett’s clear first choice right wing-back.

The Verdict

Lions supporters will be happy to hear that a good effort has been made to McNamara amid interest from the R’s.

The bids made so far appear to have been nominal but should the 23-year-old not agree new terms soon, they may come in with an offer that Milwall feel they have to consider.

Losing the defender now would be a really frustrating blow after bringing him through the academy and really starting to see the profits of their hard work last season.

He could be in for a big season in 2022/23 and Rowett will want to ensure that is at The Den not Loftus Road.

A good contract offer should help to do that.
