Millwall boss Gary Rowett has remained coy over the futures of both Alex Pearce and Matt Smith at the club, during an interview that he done recently with News at Den.

The duo are classed as two of the more senior members of the Millwall squad and are currently on course to see their respective contracts expire at the end of the season.

With both Pearce and Smith having found game time hard to come by this season at the Den, there is now real doubt over whether they will be at the club past the end of the current campaign.

However Rowett has refused to give any clarity over the situation involving the pair, as he stated the following in response to be asked about their contractual statuses:

"I don't think it's fair for me to make that comment now or that assumption publicly.

"I've spoken to both players individually to give them an idea of where they are, where they stand at the moment."

Pearce has only played four minutes of league football this season, whilst he has made two other appearances in the Carabao Cup.

Meanwhile Smith has only started seven games for the Lions this term as he too continues to be overlooked in favour of other options.

The Verdict

There is always a stage of the season where players' futures are cast into some form of doubt because of their contracts.

This is something that Rowett has grown used to at Millwall and in the grand scheme of things he won't really be focusing on resolving the issue until the summer.

Both players still have something to offer in respect to how they can contribute this season but at the same time they will know all too well that they have to earn their places in the side.

It will certainly be interesting to see if their involvement increases over the next few months or not following the conversations that they have had with the manager.
