Gary Rowett gives his verdict on former Millwall player’s move to Peterborough United

Peterborough United announced the signing of Ben Thompson last week with the 26-year-old signing an initial two year deal with the club.

After coming up through Millwall’s youth system, the midfielder has played fairly regularly for the side since the 2015/16 season but after making two appearances this season, his contract was terminated by mutual consent in January and he joined Gillingham for the second half of last season.

However, following their relegation to League Two, Thompson has found himself a free agent this summer although will be thankful Grant McCann has snapped him up in League One ahead of the new season.

Despite deciding it was best for him to leave the club at the start of the year, Millwall boss Gary Rowett had positive things to say about his former player as he told the South London Press: “I spoke to Grant McCann, he rang me about Ben.

“Like a lot of players we’ve had, I spoke very highly of him. Thommo is a really good character and he can be really effective and athletic at the top end of League One.

“He has got a lot of good qualities and characteristics. Grant is an experienced manager who can get out of that division and he’s done it before. Thommo is joining something that will be really positive next season and a club that will challenge to get back up, and also a club that improves talent and moves talent on.

“There is still an opportunity at a club like Peterborough to be in the spotlight as well as try and get out of the division. It’s a good one for Thommo and we wish him all the very best.”

The Verdict:

Despite Thompson leaving Millwall earlier in the season, it’s clear that Rowett still thinks highly of him as both a person and a player and a step down a level to Peterborough could do him some good in his career as he has played regular League One football with Millwall before.

Furthermore, although he will be taking a step down a league, Peterborough will be looking to compete at the top end of the league next season and therefore it would give the 26-year-old a chance to regain his confidence to push up at a high level.

Whilst his time at Millwall didn’t work out the way he would’ve hoped, his new moves looks to be one that could get his career back on the track he wants.
