Gary Rowett has stated that Millwall must have a Premier League mentality in order to get out of the Championship.

The former Stoke City boss took over as manager on Monday night and has already set about his ambitions for the club, as he looks to set the aim of getting to the Premier League.

Rowett has been at a number of different Championship clubs in the past and he'll be hoping his experience can go a long way to helping Millwall become more consistent and push up the table.

He has taken over from Neil Harris who resigned from his post after a quite incredible four-and-a-half years at the club. Rowett has expressed his desires and what type of mentality he wants to see from his players.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Rowett said: “I am realistic that we want to build properly but the aim every season in the Championship is to get into the Premier League. You have to have that Premier League mentality, even if you are in the Championship trying to get out of it. That mentality of trying to win every game is going to be important.”

The Verdict

It's quite a good fit in my opinion, and I think his style of football will suit the Millwall squad and fans down to the ground as they look to become a more solid Championship side.

They don't want to be languishing near the relegation zone like they have done in previous seasons and they want to try and push up the league and become a potential threat to the top-half of the table.

Rowett will be able to get the defence very organised, something that he's very good at, and with the Millwall squad's determination, they will have opportunities to win any game in this division, like they showed against Leeds.
