Stoke City manager Gary Rowett blasted his side after their 2-1 defeat away to West Brom on Saturday, calling his team 'dopey', report the BBC

Dwight Gayle scored both the goals for the Baggies as Benik Afobe missed a second-half penalty to condemn the Potters to their third loss of the season already.

"Today probably sums up our first six games of the season, to be honest," Rowett said after the match.

"We are clearly a good side with good individuals, but we are being a little bit dopey and it is costing us dearly at the minute."

"Silly mistakes are impacting the games, because once again I don't think that, for as good a side as West Brom are, they carved us open with great play too many times."

Gayle opened the scoring just 16 minutes into the game with one of the goals of the weekend, if not the season.

Receiving Kieran Gibbs' pass on the edge of the Stoke penalty area, the on-loan Newcastle man turned brilliantly and took two defenders out of the game completely.

He then kept his composure to round Jack Butland before firing home the opener.

The former Crystal Palace man made it 2-0 just before the hour mark as the Potters were beaten by a simple long ball over the top by Jake Livermore.

Gayle took a lookup before lashing the ball past Jack Butland on the half volley, beating the England goalkeeper at his near post.

Benik Afobe wasted a golden chance to bring Rowett's side back into the match when his penalty hit the in the 71st minute after Livermore had handled on the goal line.

Erik Pieters eventually grabbed a terrific consolation in the 94th minute but it was too little too late by that point.

The verdict

Granted, this is one of the tougher matches that Stoke will have this season but when you compare the summers that each side has had you would think Rowett's side should get the better of Moore's here.

But things are taking  worryingly long time to click for the Potters and the longer they take to do so the harder an immediate return to the Premier League will be.
