Gary Roberts believes that his former Portsmouth teammate Jamal Lowe is ready to make the step up to the Championship next season.

Lowe enjoyed an outstanding season for Pompey during the last campaign, 17 goals and providing nine assists in 55 appearances in all competitions, as Kenny Jackett's side reached the semi finals of the League One play-offs.

The winger's performances have led to interest from the second tier, with Portsmouth News reporting that both Millwall and Wigan Athletic are interested in Lowe, while Sky Sports have claimed that Leeds United and recently relegated Cardiff City are interested in the 25-year-old.

Roberts, who spent the final few months of his time at Fratton Park before his move to Wigan in 2017 playing alongside Lowe, is confident that the winger can make the transition to the second tier, as he told News Shopper: “I’ve seen enough of the Championship now to say he will be comfortable in that level, definitely.

“Jamal’s genuinely a good player, has an eye for goal and is humble. When you’ve had that non-league grounding it gives you that little bit extra and you can see how much he wants to do well."

Lowe only joined Portsmouth from non-league Hampton and Richmond in January 2017, and has gone onto make 119 appearances and score 29 goals in all competitions for the club.

The verdict

Roberts may well be right here.

Lowe has been hugely impressive at Fratton Park this season, and it is no surprise that there are Championship sides interested in the winger, as they look to strengthen their sides for next season.

He has already adapted well to the step up from non-league to Football League, so there is no reason why he wouldn't now be able to make the move from third tier to the second tier.
