For all the pre-season expectation, and early season promise, it seems that there is one, increasingly prominent and lingering question hanging over Leeds United's hopes of a long-awaited return to the Premier League.

For all the strength that Marcelo Bielsa's side seem to have throughout their outfield squad, there still seems to plenty of concern around Kiko Casilla's position as the club's number one goalkeeper, so much so that even one of the most prominent figures of contempt over recent years has noticed it.

Speaking about Casilla's performances during Sky Sports' live coverage of Leeds' 3-0 win over Salford City in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, former Manchester United captain and defender Gary Neville claimed that he would be a 'nervous wreck' playing in front of the Spaniard.

Worryingly for Leeds, that is something that is hard to disagree with, which makes this something that the Elland Road club may well live to regret.

As impressive as Casilla's shot-stopping has been during his time at the club, his command of the penalty area and all-round decision making has left much to be desired.

Indeed, it seems hard to know which crosses Casilla is and is not going to come for, and even harder to know which of those he does come for he is going to catch, and which he is going to parry.

As a result, you can fully understand Neville's claim about being a 'nervous wreck' while defending in front of Casilla, with those currently playing that role never quite sure what they will and will not have to deal with, and sooner rather than later, that could prove to be Leeds' downfall.

If Neville's concerns about Casilla are indeed shared by Leeds' current crop of defenders, that is exactly the sort of thing that can distract them from their own roles, which is only likely to lead to even more mistakes in Leeds' backline, which will surely cost them in that much talked about push for promotion.

What is particularly strange about the situation around Casilla at Elland Road, is that Leeds have just had a whole summer with which to address it.

Indeed, despite the concerns around Casilla coming to prominence well before the start of the summer transfer window, the Yorkshire side were not exactly proactive when it came to strengthening their options between the posts in the summer.

Despite the sale of Bailey Peacock-Farrell to Premier League side Burnley, and reports linking Casilla with a return to Spain with Sevilla, it wasn't until the final day of the window that Leeds actually added to their goalkeeping options, when they completed the season-long loan of 19-year-old Illan Meslier from French second-tier side Lorient.

Given the inexperience of Meslier, and the departure of Peacock-Farrell, it looks as though Leeds are set to stick with Casilla between the posts until January at least, when Leeds will next get the chance to alter their goalkeeping options should they wish to do so.

If by that point Neville's observations about Casilla have had the possible consequences they could, Leeds may well be tempted to make that change, although by that point, those hopes of a return to the Premier League have already been dealt a heavy blow, as a result of that previous inactivity.
