Reading defender, John O’Shea confirmed that he is to retire at the end of the season, putting an end to a hugely successful playing career.

The Irishman spent a number of years with Manchester United and Sunderland before making the move to Berkshire at the start of this year’s campaign.

Former Manchester United team-mate, Gary Neville took to Twitter to look back at one of O’Shea’s finest moments in a United shirt.

O’Shea has had a number of successful years at the very top and netted a memorable goal against Liverpool, which will certainly be one the sticks in the memories of the Old Trafford faithful.

He made 393 appearances in total for the Red Devils across a 12-year-spell with the club before moving to Sunderland.

After being relegated with the Black Cats last season, the experienced defender moved to Berkshire to play for Reading in what proved to be his final club before retiring.

It remains to be seen as to whether he will feature in Reading’s last game of the season, when they take on Birmingham City at the Madejski Stadium.

The Verdict:

What an excellent playing career he has had.

O’Shea enjoyed a number of successful years at the very top of football and his achievements speak for themselves with a number of success stories, especially with Manchester United.

A player who will surely be looking at staying in football in the future, with his experience being a valuable asset to a number of teams.
