Gary Neville has issued a sly dig at Leeds United, after Salford City drew the Sky Bet Championship side in the first round of the League Cup.

Leeds have today received their fixtures for the upcoming Championship season, whilst this evening the draw for the first round of the League Cup has been announced.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side will go up against Salford at Moor Lane, with Neville, of course, having part ownership alongside his ‘Class of 92’ Manchester United teammates.

Now, Neville has taken to Twitter to issue a message to Leeds ahead of August’s meeting.

“Welcome back into my life Leeds United. Not seen you for 15 years.”

Neville’s message is in reference to the fact that Leeds have not faced Manchester United in a Premier League fixture since 2004 now, with the Whites enduring a tough spell in the Football League.

However, Neville did come up against the Whites back in 2010, when a Jermaine Beckford goal inflicted a 1-0 defeat on his beloved Manchester United, when Leeds were a third-tier side under Simon Grayson.

The Verdict

This is a great little League Cup tie and it gives a competition that Leeds would usually overlook an edge. Their supporters will want to win and rub it in the faces of the Manchester United men associated with Salford.

Expect plenty more messages directed at Neville following this, and I’m sure that the ex-Manchester United man will be responding as well.

After such a long time without the Roses Rivalry, to have it back in some capacity is great to see.
