Birmingham City midfielder Gary Gardner has shared an emotional post after his loan spell with the club came to an end following the final whistle on Sunday.

He made the move on loan from Aston Villa back in the summer transfer window and has been a regular in Garry Monk's side, frequently playing alongside his older brother Craig.

And that is who his latest post was aimed at.

Posting to Instagram he thanked his brother for all he has done during his time at the club.

Writing alongside a picture of the two of them mid-match, Gary said: "This picture says everything I couldn’t thank you enough."

In total the 26-year-old made 40 appearances in an eventful Championship campaign, scoring two goals and assisting three more.

Last Sunday's 0-0 draw with Reading at the Madjeski Stadium meant the Blues finished the season in 17th place despite receiving a nine-point penalty in March.

Without that hinderance, Monk would have guided his side to 14th place.

The verdict

I am not sure Gardner will be too popular a figure back at Villa after this season.

But I say fair play to him. We often see players make a loan move and fail to immerse themselves and it never goes well for them.

I don't think any player would have been able to resist the feeling of unity at St. Andrews this season.
