Gary Caldwell secures League One Manager of the Month award

After an unbeaten month, Wigan Athletic manager Gary Caldwell has been named the Sky Bet League One Manager of the Month, the Football League has confirmed.

The 33-year-old, who celebrated a year in the dugout in February, is in his first spell as a manager after a illustrious career that saw him play nearly 200 games in the SPL as well as 100 games in the Premier League.

Despite being unable to keep the Latics in the Championship last season, the Scot has led his side second in League Two, four points behind leaders Burton Albion.

In four league games, the club have scored seven goals and conceded just once and there has been significant improvement under Caldwell at the DW Stadium.

“It’s great to receive the award, the first one for me as a manager but really I don’t see it as a personal award, more of a collective recognition of what we have achieved as a coaching team because everyone makes a vital contribution,” said the former centre-back.

“So I have to give thanks to my staff first and foremost, then to the players because it is them who have put in a great effort in what was a very tough month.

“The key things now is for us to maintain our consistency as we move to the crucial last few weeks of the season, and not to lose our drive. We have to keep 100 per cent focused on reaching our target of promotion.”

The Latics will be looking to close the gap on the Brewers as they travel to bottom side Colchester United on Saturday.
