Two time European Cup winner Garry Birtles has identified where Nottingham Forest can still improve going forward.

Nottingham Forest sit second in the Championship but they are not the complete package just yet, they have talented players such as Joe Lolley and Lewis Grabban, along with the emerging Brennan Johnson coming through the youth ranks.

Along with these, the Reds made a smart acquisition in the summer bringing in Brice Samba, who has been as solid as they come between the sticks every time he has featured so far this season.

Michael Dawson who came through the ranks at the club has been outstanding, along with Joe Worrall, who has returned following a loan spell at Rangers after being out of favour under Aitor Karanka, but now is a crucial player at the heart of defence.

Despite the evident quality they have in their ranks, Garry Birtles still thinks there is something missing.

Nottingham Forest legend Birtles spoke with Nottinghamshire Live to speak about his former side.

"With Forest second in the Championship, it's more a case of making minor tweaks. My one concern - and it's a really minor one - is the lack of clear cut chances" Birtles said.

"I'm nit picking here, but that's what could take them over the edge to being right up there still at the end of the season.

"They've got plenty of creative players, players that can nick them a goal and that's great to see".

The Verdict

Nottingham Forest have done well so far this season but echoing Birtles point, they haven't been clinical enough.

They have only won one game this season by more than one goal, a home game against Birmingham City.

If the Reds want to stay in and around the play-off places they are going to need to sharpen up and create more chances for the forward players.
