Garry Rowett has issued an update on the fitness of James McClean ahead of Stoke City’s trip to Rotherham United on Saturday.

The Potters travel to the New York Stadium looking to secure only their third win in the Championship this season after their relegation last year.

In their last two fixtures in league and cup, Stoke have found themselves 3-0 down before recovering somewhat to a more dignifying defeat, losing 3-2 in consecutive matches.

One player who has missed the last few weeks through injury is the Republic of Ireland international McClean who has been sidelined through injury.

The 28-year-old has since returned to full training ahead of a possible inclusion this weekend away to the Millers.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Rowett spoke of his dilemma as to whether he should include the winger this Saturday or not.

Rowett told Stoke’s official website: “James McClean is back in training.

“We have to assess the risk though of him being involved - if he plays and gets injured how long could he be out for?

“He had his first contact session today, and as far as I know, he came through it okay.”

The Verdict

It is a risk bringing back a player who has only just returned to full training, and the consequences of the player breaking down so soon after a return are multiplied should he start.

But these are tough times for Stoke City supporters, and Gary Rowett might have to take the risk in the hope it pays off with a positive result for the Potters.

If it does, it will be a masterstroke of a decision.

If not, then it will be a foolhardy move that backfires and could see the winger out longer than he has already been missing.

A fine balancing act is in the offing for Rowett who needs to weigh up the pros and cons of including James McClean this weekend.
