Garry Monk will be a failure if he doesn’t achieve promotion with Middlesbrough

After a very good season in charge of Leeds United, it came as a surprise to many that Garry Monk opted to quit his role as manager at the Whites.

He led them to their best season since 2010 and it felt like he had a project brewing down at Elland Road.

However, Monk took the decision to leave Leeds and take up the vacant manager’s role at recently relegated Middlesbrough.

Since his arrival at the Riverside, Monk has been backed very strongly in the transfer market.

Boro shelled out just shy of £50m in transfers this summer, with the likes of Britt Assombalonga and Ashley Fletcher joining for big money moves.

They have brought in a number of players with an abundance of Championship experience this summer, with Jonny Howson, Cyrus Christie, Darren Randolph, Britt Assombalonga and Ryan Shotton all having played in the league before.

Boro were by far the biggest spenders this summer, with no other team coming close to the amount they have spent this summer.

Despite this being a team who have only just come together, for me there is no excuse for Monk not to lead Middlesbrough to promotion this season.

Even though the transfer market is massively inflated at the moment, for a Championship team to spend that amount of money in one transfer window is crazy.

Monk has had a far from convincing start to life at the Riverside, with just two wins from five games so far.

With around hefty amount of striking talent at Monk’s disposal, Boro have managed to conjure up just four goals from the first five league games this season, perhaps showing the former Swansea manager has yet to stamp an identity on his side so far.

They have also lost both away leagues games so far and this must change if they are to be successful this season.

Having said all that, there is plenty of time this season for Monk to get it right at Boro, but the early signs are that there is lots of work to be done.
