Birmingham City boss Garry Monk insists that this season has been a success because of the way the club is united - no matter what happens between now and May.

A hard-fought win over Bristol City in the week lifted Blues to within three points of the Robins who occupy the final play-off spot at the moment.

Therefore, many see Monk's side as contenders for a top six finish, even if it seemed unlikely when the season began.

However, Monk wouldn't be drawn on that when speaking to the official site, instead revealing why he is so proud of everyone connected with the club.

"Everyone together: the fans, the players, the staff, everyone connected with the club is fighting on the right page and for me that has been the biggest success of the season, no matter what happens.

"We are just trying to fight in every game, give our maximum. If it comes the end of the season and we are near that situation, then great, but it's not really our focus if I'm honest with you."

Blues have also been impacted by FFP issues that have been hanging over them for months now, with a points deduction still possible before the season is over.

The Verdict

This is a great message from Monk and you have to agree with what he says.

When he arrived at St. Andrew's the club and fan base were disconnected but he has given them a team to be proud of - which the manager deserves a lot of credit for.

Their play-off challenge might be out of their hands if the points deduction is applied but either way the supporters have a manager and group of players that they know are giving everything which is what's needed in these circumstances.
