Newly appointed Middlesbrough manager Garry Monk has revealed that the new ownership structure is why he left Leeds United.

Monk was appointed as manager of Leeds last summer following his sacking by Swansea City and led the club to the seventh place, despite pre-season expectations of a mid-table finish.

He handed in a request to leave the club following the conclusion of the 2016/17 season amid speculation that Middlesbrough and Sunderland were both looking to appoint him.

He left the club following a takeover by Italian Andrea Radrizzani, and claims the new ownership model and structure of the club is the reason why he decided to depart.

He told the Mirror: “New people came in and there was a new structure.

“I talked to the new ownership about what the new process would be and I thought it would carry on but for whatever reason it didn’t work out.

“I don’t really want to go into the detail of that right now but it didn’t suit me and so I had to take a decision.

“Leeds are a great club, I loved it. There are a lot of good people there and the fans are fantastic and I wish them all well.”

Middlesbrough were relegated from the Premier League last season following promotion from the Championship the season before. They are looking to Monk to take them back to the promised land.

They'll hope he'll serve them better than Aitor Karanka, who's negative style of play in the Premier League left them the division's lowest scorers and second bottom of the table.
