Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk has revealed the reasoning behind dropping goalkeeper Cameron Dawson for the fixture with Wycombe Wanderers.

Joe Wildsmith came into the starting XI and started his first game of the campaign and impressed making a number of key saves as well as looking comfortable coming to collect crosses against a physical Wycombe side.

Despite losing 1-0 in the fixture, Monk will be able to take some positive from the goalkeeper situation and see that he has good competition for the number one spot at the club.

Monk has expressed that he made the decision to bring Wildsmith in to try and change the feel of the defence, and make it more solid going into the next few crucial months

Speaking to Yorkshire Live, Monk said: "It was just to give a feel back to the team.

"It has not been helpful in front of Cameron but I just felt making a change might give a different feel to it. That was the reason behind it."

Sheffield Wednesday are set to return to action in midweek, when they take on promotion-chasing AFC Bournemouth, in what is certain to be a tricky test for the Owls.

The Verdict

Monk will feel as though he can now rely 0n Wildsmith and it wouldn't be a surprise whatsoever to see him keep the number one spot for the upcoming fixtures.

Dawson had a really poor game at Rotherham United, and it's good to see Monk stand firm and show that he is able to make key decisions in order to try and benefit the team.

It will be very interesting to see if the Owls and Monk can get themselves out of the relegation zone or whether someone else has to come in to try and get results.
