Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk heaped praise on his players after they thrashed Nottingham Forest at the City Ground yesterday.

The Owls produced arguably the result of the day by winning 4-0 at the Reds, with all four goals coming in the first half. Monk's side were ruthless and clinical throughout and the hosts struggled to deal with the intensity that Wednesday showed.

The result moved the Yorkshire side up to fifth in the Championship and they will take huge confidence going into the hectic festive period.

And, Monk outlined exactly why he was so pleased with the display when speaking to the club's media following the win.

"We were ruthless, aggressive, very professional and it was a thoroughly deserved win, we controlled it really well. Massive credit to the players because it’s been a tough week."

The ex-Birmingham chief also gave credit to Jordan Rhodes after his perfect hat-trick inspired the victory.

"We are so pleased for Jordan, we know his quality, he has a fantastic attitude, is an excellent professional and he took his opportunity today."

Wednesday host Bristol City next week in their final game before Christmas.

The verdict

That was the complete performance from Sheffield Wednesday and it sent out a real statement to the rest of the league.

They defended well, were tactically sound and ruthless in front of goal - it was all Monk could ask for and he is right to praise the players for how they did.

Now, the challenge is to maintain those high standards moving forward and if they do then a top six finish is entirely possible.
