Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk says that he can understand the frustrations of the club's fans, after his side were booed off following their 1-1 draw with Barnsley on Saturday afternoon.

Despite taking an early lead through January signing Josh Windass, goalkeeper Cameron Dawson's error gifted Cauley Woodrow an equaliser for the struggling Tykes before half time at Oakwell.

The Owls then missed several chances to retake the lead, but were ultimately forced to settle for a point at Oakwell, meaning they have now won just one of their last eight league games, leading to boos from the away end at full time.

Speaking after the game, Monk was asked if he could understand that response from the Wednesday faithful, with the manager quoted by The Sheffield Star as saying: "Yeah, of course. We all want to win.

"We put ourselves in a good position to win the game by going a goal up."

Reflecting on the impact that equaliser had on the course of the game, Monk continued: "We were disappointed to concede in the way we did because we had given ourselves a good foothold at that point.

"It (the equaliser) changed the course of the game a little bit."

Following that draw with Barnsley, Wednesday are now 11th in the Championship table, six points adrift of the play-offs ahead of their trip to bottom club Luton Town on Wednesday night.

The Verdict

I do agree with Monk that you can understand the frustrations of those Wednesday fans here.

The Owls had looked well set for a push for the play-offs places not that long ago, so the fact that it suddenly looks quite some way away will inevitably be a big disappointment for those of a Wednesday persuasion.

Indeed, with this draw at Barnsley following up that defeat at Wigan just a week and a half ago, there will certainly be a sense that the club are missing big opportunities to put themselves back in the mix for the top-six spots with those matches against the bottom clubs.

With that in mind, this game at Luton feels like a must-win on Wednesday night, not only to keep what play-off hopes they have alive, but also to lift some of the pressure on the club full stop, and show they are capable of dealing with the pressure of winning games they are expected to.
