Sheffield Wednesday picked up their second win of the Championship season after beating Birmingham City 1-0 at St. Andrew's yesterday.

With the Owls starting the campaign on -12 points, they knew the importance of a quick start and the victory at Blues leaves them seven points from safety after five games.

It was also Wednesday's second clean sheet, with recent signing Aden Flint starring at the back for the team.

The towering defender was handed his debut by Monk and the manager told the Sheffield Star that he was delighted with how quickly the 31-year-old adapted.

"Aden didn’t even come in in time to train with the team. You saw what Aden brought today. It’s about character and his experience.

"He’s come here determined. Unless you’ve had money to spend you’re going to get players in situations – maybe they haven’t been playing or out of favour. We’ve found players with the right profile, the right mentality."

Flint is sure to start as the Owls welcome Brentford to Hillsborough on Wednesday in what will be his first home game.

The verdict

As he didn't sign until late in the window it was something of a surprise to see Flint in the XI yesterday but it just shows the faith and confidence Monk has in the player.

And, he repaid that superbly. Flint was a dominant figure throughout and his leadership skills were crucial in organising his teammates to ensure they kept a clean sheet.

So, he warranted this praise from the boss and he will hope to keep this form up in the coming weeks.
