Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk has backed goalkeeper Cameron Dawson to bounce back from his mistake which led to Barnsley's goal in the two sides' 1-1 draw this afternoon.

Dawson has wrestled the Owls' number-one jersey from long-term mainstay Keiren Westwood this campaign, but he has now made a colossal error as his poor clearance allowed Cauley Woodrow to level the scores for Barnsley in the 24th minute.

This came just eight minutes after Wednesday's new signing Josh Windass had given his side a one-goal lead at Oakwell, and Monk's men then could not find any breakthrough during the remainder of the match.

The result means that Wednesday have now collected just five points from their last eight second-tier matches, but Monk has jumped to the defence of Dawson following the goalkeeper's key role in Barnsley's goal, as per Sheffield Star reporter Dom Howson.

"When goalkeepers make mistakes, nine times out of 10 it will lead to a goal scoring situation," he said.

"He made a mistake and it got them their equaliser but that is the life of a goalkeeper.

"He will bounce back from that. I know he will."

Dawson has now made 18 Championship appearances for the Hillsborough outfit so far this campaign, during which time he has conceded 19 goals and kept seven clean sheets.

The Verdict

Monk has clearly taken a liking to Dawson given this is not the first time that the goalkeeper has made an error from his side, and it will be interesting to see whether he is now able to retain the Owls' number-one jersey.

The manager's comments suggest that Dawson will be given a chance to redeem himself in Wednesday's match, but there will be plenty of supporters wondering why a goalkeeper of Westwood's quality is now not being given a chance.

The Owls are clearly not in the best run of form and something definitely needs to change, so I would give Westwood a run-out in Wednesday's clash with Luton in order to put a refreshing spin on the team.
