Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk has admitted that the club have been in talks with Jackson Irvine but he indicated a deal for the midfielder won't be happening.

The Australian international is a free agent having left Hull City in the summer and is still to find a club.

With the Owls looking for reinforcements to help their survival bid, it had been reported that the 27-year-old could be on the way to Hillsborough.

However, whilst acknowledging talks had taken place, Monk appeared to indicate that Irvine won't be joining when speaking to the Sheffield Star.

"We take a close look at everyone. Some get further down the line than others and of course Jackson was one of those ones, like many that were on the radar, but these players are on many people’s radar.

"Of course he came up in conversations and stuff like that but at the end of the day it’s where it is, he’s not a Sheffield Wednesday player, we don’t have to speculate on any of that and I’m concentrating on the group."

The boss didn't rule out the possibility of a free agent signing in the coming weeks.

The verdict

It's a surprise that Irvine hasn't found a Championship club yet as he is at a good age and has proven himself at this level in the past.

From Wednesday's perspective, he would've been a very useful option to strengthen the midfield and you could have seen him play a role to help the team moving forward.

But, it's unlikely to happen and the Owls will look elsewhere, so it will be interesting to see if they bring anyone in.
