Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk has claimed he is placing focus on strengthening his side's attacking options as the January transfer window enters its final week.

The Hillsborough outfit have only completed one signing so far this month with Argentine winger Manuel Hidalgo joining on a permanent deal from Triestina, but Monk has now revealed that he is committed to adding further depth before the month is out.

The Wednesday boss was speaking after his side's 2-1 win over QPR in the FA Cup fourth round, but their 5-0 defeat to Blackburn last weekend will have left Owls supporters demanding new signings to help boost their play-off hopes this campaign.

Monk's men are currently sitting four points adrift of the play-off places at 10th in the Championship table ahead of their trip to Wigan next weekend, but it seems the Owls are not any closer to getting incoming deals over the line ahead of this encounter.

“I know what we are trying to do. It is not quite there," Monk told Sheffield Star reporter Dom Howson.

“It’s the attacking areas we are looking at. We are keeping our eyes open and looking to strengthen what we already have. “Let’s see what we can do.”

The Verdict

The fact Wednesday have not yet managed to add any senior players will come as a concern to supporters, particularly following their 5-0 defeat last weekend, but Monk's comments here suggest he is well aware of the need to strengthen his side.

The Owls definitely need to add attacking players given their goalscoring record is not quite at the level to mount a serious assault on the top six, and there will surely be widespread frustration if the club is unable to get deals over the line before the deadline.

It is important Wednesday now secure some signings to help ride this positive wave following their cup win over QPR, particularly given the fluctuating nature of the Hillsborough outfit's recent form in all competitions.

I would expect Wednesday to get at least one signing over the line before the window closes, but it would certainly not do them any harm to add further numbers if options open up.
