Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk has revealed he is unlikely to be able to call upon attacker Fernando Forestieri or goalkeeper Keiren Westwood for his side's match with Brentford on Saturday due to their continuing injury problems.

Forestieri made his first start since Monk's appointment as Owls manager in their 3-1 win at Charlton on Saturday, but was withdrawn at half time in the match at The Valley with a knee injury.

Speaking about Forestieri's current injury status in his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash with the Bees, Monk was quoted by The Star as saying: “Fernando picked up that niggle, knock to the knee, that’s why he came off.

“It’s still a bit niggly, it’s hard to put a timeframe on it, you’re going off the player and it could be anything between seven and 10 days.

“So he’s very unlikely for the weekend. He’s reacting well, he’s getting the right treatment and he’s being looked after. Hopefully it won’t be too long.”

Westwood meanwhile has missed the last two games with a shoulder problem, and it appears the goalkeeper is unlikely to return this weekend, as when discussing the 35-year-old, Monk continued: “He’s still feeling his injury, we’re going off his reaction to it.

“It’ll be dictated by him but he’s receiving treatment, he’s on the mend. We haven’t really got a timescale on it, he’s in a good place and there’s a slight inflammation.”

In his absence, Cameron Dawson - who would have been handed the gloves against Charlton regardless of Westwood's injury situation - looks set to continue between the posts for Wednesday against Brentford.

The Verdict

This will be something of a source of frustration for Monk and co.

Injuries are never a useful thing to have, but it does seem as though the continuing problems with these two could be about to come at a rather inconvenient time for Wednesday.

With the busy Christmas schedule now just about upon us, Monk would have as many members of his squad available as possible, in order to cope with the physical challenges of playing so many games in so little time.

That being said, Wednesday do seem to have coped reasonably well without Forestieri and Westwood recently, meaning they may be backing themselves to come through this latest challenge in the short term at least.
