Following his appointment as Middlesbrough’s manager earlier this month, Garry Monk’s attentions will now have turned to the remainder of the summer, and how he can reshape his squad for the Sky Bet Championship season ahead.

After such a disappointing 2016/17 season, there is no doubt that Boro will be active during the summer transfer window, as they aim to forget last year and push for an instant return to the top-flight.

One area of his squad Monk will have to strengthen is his goalkeeping options, after Brad Guzan and Victor Valdes both left the Riverside Stadium at the end of last season.

Monk is set to hand Dimi Konstantopoulos, Boro’s 38-year old goalkeeper, a 12-month contract extension in the coming week, and there is certainly an argument that the former Greek international should be first choice back in the Championship.

Firstly, Konstantopoulos has a wealth of experience in English football, having played for Hartlepool, Coventry, Swansea and Cardiff before linking up with Boro in 2013.

The 38-year old has made over 100 appearances for Boro in four years, with nearly all of those coming in the Championship.

Konstantopoulos was a regular during the 2014/15 season, making 43 Championship appearances as Boro reached the play-off final. And the goalkeeper then featured in every league fixture the following season, as Boro were promoted to the top-flight.

Last season, Konstantopoulos was unlucky to find himself behind Guzan and Valdes at the Riverside Stadium, and was limited to just one FA Cup appearance.

Heading back into the Championship, and with a lack of options in the goalkeeping department, Konstantopoulos could find himself as first choice again under Monk.

If the 38-year old can rediscover the form he has previously shown in the Championship, and use his experience to help Boro on their return to the second-tier, he could find himself as Monk's number one next season.
