Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk is known to be hoping to retain the service of Morgan Fox and Steven Fletcher this summer, despite the fact there’s likely to be an overhaul of players at Hillsborough.

Monk arrived at Hillsborough after the start of the 2019/20 campaign, taking over a Wednesday squad many felt should be pushing for the play-offs at least.

Previously, under Carlos Carvalhal, Wednesday reached back-to-back play-off campaigns, but Jos Luhukay failed to match that and Steve Bruce left Wednesday for the Premier League.

QUIZ: These 15 players have played for both Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United – True or false?

However, a lot of those players are passed their peak and an overhaul is due at Hillsborough as Wednesday look to freshen things up ahead of 2020/21 and get back in the promotion picture under Monk.

Yet, Yorkshire Live note how Monk is keen to retain the service of both Fox and Fletcher, despite the fact they are amongst a host of players out of contract.

Fox, 26, has featured in 26 Championship appearances for Wednesday this season and impressed at left-back.

For Fletcher, the 33-year-old has also made 26 league appearances, returning 13 goals for the Owls, proving to be Monk’s most reliable option in an attacking group including the likes of Jordan Rhodes, Atdhe Nuhiu and Sam Winnall.

The Verdict

You can fully see why Monk wants to retain Fox and Fletcher this summer.

The overhaul of players will involve those who are past their peak and not at the level Wednesday require, which certainly isn’t the case for either Fox or Fletcher.

Arguably, they have been Wednesday’s best two players this season and without them, things would’ve been ugly for the mid-table Owls.
